"Durham, NC -- Cree Research, Inc. has built the missing link in full-color light-emitting diode (LED) displays -- a pure blue emission diode. Three families of silicon carbide blue LEDs use a low power peak wavelength to produce the purer blue. LEDs are semiconductors that produce visible when connected to an electrical power source. List prices for Cree's die are $1.47 in 100,000-unit quantities -- that's about a tenth the cost of the competetion, Cree says. By combining the new blue with red and green LED chips, designers can produce any color light in the visible spectrum, including white. For more information, call Cree at (919)-361-5709." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Steve Muldoon (DEC Educational Services)| It's a journey with my soul | that I am taking, muldoon@books.dec.com | One that only goes !decwrl!books.dec.com!muldoon | from the cradle to the grave... muldoon%books.dec@decwrl.dec.com | - Kate Wolf -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Contact Marktech Internationl Corp. (518) 436 - 5877 or LEDtronics which is located in Costa Mesa CA I believe. Sorry no phone number for LEDtronics, if I find it I will post. A Company called Cree Research is also producing low cost blue LEDS and the other companies may be OEM suppliers of the Cree Blue LED or may purchase the LED die from Cree and package them.

So far DigiKey is not selling blue LED's. Is there any wholesaler that is? --Phil Howard, KA9WGN-- | Individual CHOICE is fundamental to a free society <phil@ux1.cso.uiuc.edu> | no matter what the particular issue is all about.

To all those asking about Blue LEDs, here's some info. There are a number of them starting to come on the market at more useful prices (still high) around $10 CDN (depending on quantities). The blue LED that I mentioned is from Marktech, 5 Hemlock Street, Latham New York, USA (12110). Phone lines: voice # 518-786-6591, fax # 518-786- 6599. The part numbers are MT1018D-BL (Diffused) and MT1018-BL (Clear). Spec's are: Silicon Carbide, 470nm peak wavelength, Vf= 2.9 to 4.0 volts at 50mA for a luminous intensity of 10mcd with a viewing half-angle of 7 degrees. Hope this help. Cheers.

Jameco is now selling Blue LEDs. They're $20 a piece for the low power type and $15 a piece for the high power one. Look in the back of a Radio-Electronics or Hand's On Electronics for their ad. Leslie Farkas lafarkas@tcgould.tn.cornell.edu

$20 for low power and $15 for high power MAY be correct. Perhaps they give out the SAME light level, or in any event the $20 one may be better or more efficient. --Phil Howard, KA9WGN-- | Individual CHOICE is fundamental to a free society <phil@ux1.cso.uiuc.edu> | no matter what the particular issue is all about.

Yeah, I bought one directly from the company that makes them. For what's it's worth, the color is a light blue, not the intense, spectral blue you might have hoped for.
