[sci.electronics] Continuous Music System

cccph@eel.cs.ucla.edu (Charles Hobbs) (07/15/90)

I know everyone is into CD's and DAT's now, but I'm going to bring
up 8-track tape cartridges.

Everyone done gasping in disbelief? All right.

What I am looking for is several 8-track transports. (at least
10 or 12, initially). These will be used to make a continuous
music system where the tape loops will be played in sucession.
(I am also developing a method of providing limited random access
to songs in this "tape bank")

If anyone knows where I might procure surplus 8 track tape transports
(which, by the way, should use low voltage as opposed to 120 V), or
knows of a better, *inexpensive* way to accomplish a similar result,
please let me know.

Thakns in advance....

8-track transports??

There are huge resourses of low-voltage 8-track players right under your
nose!! (or not too much further, anyway :-) )
Just start scrounging at yard sales/ flea markets and in no time at all,
I'm sure you can aquire 10 to 12 old automobile 8-track players
(12 volts is a nice, convenient low voltage)
Expect to pay *no more* than a dollar or two for these wonders of
technology! :-) Besides, think of how good you'll feel when you
realize how you're helping to prevent our nation's landfills from
overrunning with millions and millions of these beasties! :-)

Here's a system I never built, but would be really neat:

I planned to purchase two double-cassette players capable of auto-reverse
and add an intelligent controller. The controller would turn on each player
in turn, switching players whenever a special tone is detected (subaudible).

It's a helluva lot of work, but it would be a beautiful system, because it
would alternate songs, not tapes. The same four tapes wouldn't repeat
the same sequence of songs for years, if ever!

I was going to donate it for a pirate radio project, and one of the tapes
would have station break stuff on it.
