Thanks for the responses to my request for the NMEA 0180/0183 spec's. Most people suggested this month's Practical Sailor. That article, while useful, is not the level of detail I had wanted (only skimmed it so far). In fact the article makes me want the real spec's even more, as it discusses why two devices using the same spec won't talk (tragic, but it is good to know that this sort of thing goes on everywhere). I had already as one person suggested, talked to NMEA. They want $38 US for the spec and I was told the 0180 part I wanted was only 6 pages long (poorly written as this person above suggested). Oh well, I guess that's what boating is all about. I did try the manufacturer (Apelco), but they are secretive about the technology in their lorans.
