[sci.electronics] Three rings is not enough

My family just got an answering machine for the house, but it's one of
those cheap ones that picks up on the third ring (not adjustable), and
three rings is barely enough time to realize that the thing is ringing,
let alone try to find the phone and pick it up. Does anyone have any
suggestions for a circuit that would increase the number of rings. I
don't know much about phones, but I was thinking that a device could
be put in between the machine and the outlet which would silence the
line to the machine until about 6 or seven rings had gone by.

Thanks in advance,

Andrew.
