[sci.electronics] Need Schematic for a 5Watt audio amp

swood@vela.acs.oakland.edu (Scott Wood) (08/02/90)

I have not done any tinkering in a while, and I would like to build me a
simple little monitor for my keyboard with say a 5 Watt out put at 8 ohms
for a high Z headphone style input. Any one have such a thing on hand

An LM384 (about $2 from DigiKey and others) will do 5 watts, given a
24 volt power supply, 3 caps, a resistor, and a pot for a volume
control. Radio Shack also has some easy IC answers to your problem.
Check out a National Semi IC manual that covers audio ICs for more
possibilities (e.g., using a two-channel chip in a bridge mode so
you can get the power using a lower supply voltage...)

A LM386 would probably suffice. While it can only put out about half a
watt, you might be surprised how loud that is. If you're using this
to amplify audio for headphones, half a watt would most certainly
suffice.
