[sci.electronics] gyro / flux-gate compass info needed

pvo@sapphire.OCE.ORST.EDU (Paul O'Neill) (08/09/90)

A colleague needs info on available compasses or gyros that can be
interfaced to a 0-5VDC ADC for use in a miniature submersible.

"Cheap, hack-your-own" are the keywords. No spendy navigation companies
need apply :-)

Thanks.

The November '89 issue of Radio Electronics showed how to tap off
2 voltages from the Radio Shack Electronic Car Compass to provide
heading information for a computer. This compass costs $50.

For about $300 you can get a gimbaled, dampened Flux Gate with
RS232 out (ala NMEA standard) from a marine supply house such
as West Marine.
