[sci.electronics] help with choke color code

yhu@umbc5.umbc.edu (Mr. Ying Hu; CMSC (GRAD)) (08/14/90)

I need somebody to help me with this choke color code.
the color stripes are:
green
yellow
red
gold
gold

On my schemetic diagram it was labeled as 5.4 mH, but on the parts list
it was 5.4 uH. And I don't know what the first gold color means.
Thanks in advance.

As you've no doubt noticed, the first three match the good ol' resistor
color code (green = 5, yellow = 4, etc.). Given that red = 2 in this
code, I'd wager that the value given is in uH - which means it's a 5.4 mH
part (5400 uH = 5.4 mH). As to the two golds, one is almost certainly
tolerance - probably +/- 5% - while the other is anybody's guess at this
point (Q?).

One other clue - unless it's a little air-core inductor, it's very UNLIKELY
to have a value as low as 5.4 uH. On the other hand, 5.4 mH is a very
reasonable value for a small iron or ferrite-core coil.
