I am hoping that someone out there has some knowledge of the Zenith EZ-1 IBM-compatible computer. My friend bought one years ago with two floppy drives and some additional ports. He has just acquired a hard disk which he wants to install in the computer. Unfortunately, there are no expansion slots and he doesn't know if the mother board is already capable of controlling a hard drive. Does anyone have any experience with this PC and what has to be done to add a hard disk to the system ? Any help would be much appreciated. -- Brian Nickerson Please send all replies to: uunet!mitel!spock!brian

We're kind of in the same fix, we have 4 EZ-PC's (I think we're talking
about the same machine) with hard disks and one without. We've been calling
around, and have heard two stories:
1) You need a special drive that has the controller built in
(I think they were talking about IDE drives)
2) The motherboard of a dual-floppy machine is different from the
one on a hard-drive machine.
Story #1 makes sense, and you can buy these drives for about $300. I'm not
sure about story #2, but the guys who said this said you could have your
motherboard replaced and a hard disk installed for around $700. We passed on
that deal since you could get a new machine for that much.
You can also get an expansion chassis called the WonUnder, that will let you
plug in some XT type cards, but the chassis is around $300 I think, and seemed
kind of kludgy.
