[sci.electronics] Help needed with Stepper Motors

ngparker@george.lbl.gov (Nathan G. Parker) (08/24/90)

I just received a broken Rodime 20+ hard disk. I opened it up and
took out the two stepper motors, thinking that they would be useful for
something, but I don't know how to use them.

The larger motor (used to turn the disk) has no model number on it.
It has 5 wires coming out of it and feels like it has 4 positions (90
degrees).

The smaller motor (used to move the head) says "Sinano Electric
4H4009S-0412 66A". It has only 4 wires and feels like it has about
360 positions (about 1 degree).

Can someone tell me how I could get these motors to do something
useful? I'd like to be able to give one of these motors a certain
number of "clicks" and have it turn that number, in whichever direction
I choose. Is this difficult?

   Please reply by mail. Thanks.
