[sci.electronics] Possible to replace a damaged LCD screen?

My friend has a Tandy PC-7 programmable calculator with a damaged LCD screen.
The screen looks like it was squeezed in the middle, causing the cell to
permanently darken in that area. The screen is attached to the calculator
body using something similar to a ribbon cable, flat wires stuck between 2
pieces of adhesive tape. Has anyone ever tried to replace such an arrangement?
The screen is 2-3 inches wide, so the connections are impossibly tiny, but
they're not exactly large either. Radio Shack said they can order a replacement
screen, but to have them do the repair would cost more than the value of the
calculator.
