[sci.electronics] Headlight relays, was: Car Battery Rechargers

{Roy Smith asks why cars don't have headlight relays}

#1 reason: cuz they is CHEEP!

If you put a relay that switches that much current in a car, it
may cost several dollars per car. Multiply that by 100,000's of
cars, and .........

#2 reason: We don't need to.. (see #1)

But on most European cars, you must have a parking light
displayed on the road side only, and it must turn off when the
car starts. As part of this wiring, you end off turning off the
headlights.

BTW, did you ever notice that import cars ALWAYS have separate
brake and turn signals? You cannot license a car in most EC
countries without same. As a consequence, the 4 way flashers
work, even when your foot is on the brakes.....

There is already a high current relay in the headlight circuit. All
you need is a small relay to control the existing one. The modification
to our car did cost a few dollars but had I bought 100,000 relays and
switches, I'm sure the price would be less than a buck.

Someday my sysadm will decide this is a 'real' problem. :-)

Not true!
I had a 83 Mitsubishi Starion that did not have seperate brake and turn
signals. It had only red tail lights.
