I have a friend here at the University of Georgia who is working on his PhD in Mass Communications. As part of his dissertation project, he is interested in building or obtaining a certain device (explained below). Because he can't post to USENET news, he asked me to pass along the following note for him. If anyone is interested in talking with him about this, please e-mail directly to HIM. -------------------------Begin Enclosed Note--------------------------------- I'm looking for a device which is capable of recording everything someone does with a television remote control (powering up and down, changing chan- nels, changing volume, muting, etc.) over the course of several days. The remote can be either the user's own or one supplied with the recording device. The device should be able to record the date and the time (to the nearest 1 second) that an event takes place. This information should be stored in such a manner that it can be retrieved by a PC for analysis. The purpose of this device is to passively monitor remote control usage over a period of days. Ideally, the device should be able to record for at least three days without interuption (but a one or two day time frame would still be useful). The device is intended to be used in a field study, so there are a few more requirements. First, the device should be small enough that it will be unobtrusive in a home environment. Second, it should not be designed in such a way that it would need to be hard-wired into the TV tuner. Third, it should be capable of running without the need for maintenance by the subjects. Does such a device exist already? Is such a device possible? How much would one (or, more importantly, ten) cost to build? Please e-mail me directly if you have any insight into this problem, or if you would like to discuss it further.
