I just got one of those X-10 Home Control Interfaces (CP290). It's an X-10 compatible remote control unit that takes its commands from your computer via a serial port. I was hoping to connect mine to a multiport board in my 386 Unix machine, since I don't have any other ports and most of my slots are full. But... The unit is hardwired to 600 baud! And my multiport board (Maxpeed) doesn't seem to know that speed at all. I looked inside the controller and there's not much there at all, no dip switches or anything. Mostly just an 8048 CPU and a 6116 RAM chip, and some analog parts for putting signals on the power line. Is there a cheap way to convert 600 baud to say 1200 baud? Maybe a couple of uarts and a crystal? The uarts that I've used need a CPU to set them up. Is there an even simpler way? Can someone recommend some likely parts? Any help will be greatly appreciated. -- Richard Foulk richard@pegasus.com
