[sci.electronics] 8/16 bit microprocessor/controller survey.

elee24@castle.ed.ac.uk (H Bruce) (11/09/90)

There has been alot if discussion recently in the group on microprocessors
and microcontrollers. I thought it would be a good idea to collect
poeple's input on this subject and summarize it. This would be helpful
for me as I am looking for a possible processor to replace an 8052 if
the computation gets to much.

If micro users could send data on their favourite processor, I'm sure
it would be much appreciated by many people.
Suggested areas are listed a follows, if you
have any criteria not included below, please add them.

Architecture: Von Neumann / Harvard
Cycle time: (eg 1us for 12Mhz 8051, 0.5us for 2MHz 68HC11)
Instruct. cycles: Typical cycles per instruction (eg 1 for 8051, 3 for 68HC11)
ALU: 8 bit / 16 bit, multiply and divide available ?
Address bus: 16/32 bit
Data bus 8/16 bit
Internal RAM:
Internal ROM:
Internal EEPROM:
Serial ports: Asynchronous / synchronous
Parallel ports: 8/16 bits, Handshaking
A/D converters: Conversion time.
System info: How many components are necessary for operation ?
Cost (1 off):
C compilers: Comments of availability, robustness and effectiveness.

Thanks,

Henry Bruce.
