Hello all,
A friends' tape deck has problems, caused by faulty pickup leads
(over time these have suffered metal fatigue). The leads are in the form of a
sheathed and shielded 4 conductor cable. The cost of an original part (if I
can find one) is probably excessive, and I'd like to use some other cheaper
shielded cable.
Questions:
1) do I have to worry about impedance matching? A friend says that
the head and head-amplifier will be terminated to match each other, and the
cable characteristics are negligible. Is this true?
2) how close do I have to match the cable for shielding, wire gauge,
and wire alloy? I don't have the knowledge to tell if these are high silver
content, or something else.
3) when soldering, should I try to use a silver solder? What
temperature? How susceptible to heat stress are tape heads?
If you can help, please e-mail. If there's any interest, I'll
summarize. Thanks
Mike Hermann
