Does anyone have a recommendation on books dealing will transforming algorithms into logic hardware designs? ................................................................gerard

Fletcher, Prentice-Hall, 1980 (may be a new edition), to be excellent. It covers synchronous system controllers with no uPs, since there's a zillion other books on that. Also includes a chapter on Asynchronous Finite State Machine Design. Altho' I haven't looked for it, I have seen this material in no other text and I have applied it in past jobs on more than 1 occasion. It describes how to turn a flow chart of the algorithm into hardware.
