I'd like to know something about SIMM modules. I can get generic 1M x 9 SIMM memory strips from a local vendor that are made from Samsung 41C1000AJ-8 PLLC chips for $50.00 each. I have a bunch of HP Vectra QS-25 25 MHz '386 machines in my student lab for which I'd like to increase memory. My HP reseller insists that there is something special about Vectras, but I'm not convinced that they have anything more special than interleaved memory. The HP reseller wants to sell me memory kits that use Samsung 41000BJ-8 PLLC chips. Curiously, :-), his kits are about 2x the cost at $389 for 4 SIMM strips. I've used the 41C1000AJ-8 SIMMs in a generic 33 MHz '386 that has interleaved memory with one wait state. According to the clone manual "fast page mode" SIMMs are required. The upshot is, what does the C in "41C1000AJ-8" denote? What is the difference in the "A" and "B" in the suffix? Obviously, the "J" denotes plastic packaging. I called Samsung, but I've been palying phone tag between their voice mail and our voice mail for several days. I ordered the Samsung memory products book, but my guess that'll be shipped by 3rd class banana boat.... I have 12 machines that need 4 meg each, so there is a potential to save $2400 in one shot; about enough to buy a whole extra computer system. A lot of other departments around here use Vectras too, so there is potential to save serious bucks.
