[sci.electronics] Television and magnetic fields

otto@tukki.jyu.fi (Otto J. Makela) (01/26/91)

I've had my 21" color TV set in my bookshelf for about two years now about
a foot from one of my 50 pound Radiotechnica speakers (the only good thing
to come out of Russia...) The day before yesterday, when I turned the TV
on I suddenly noticed a green splotch on the upper right corner of the screen.
Moving the speaker cleared away most of it (I guess I'll have to have my
screen degaussed). Now, why did it take two years to get the problem, and
why did it become visible suddenly like this ? Are there some failure modes
for TVs where the screen suddely becomes susceptible to magnetic fields
(like failure of some kind of built-in degauss circuitry) ?
Could a part of the problem come from the TVs own speakers (largish jobs on
both sides of the screen for stereo TV sound), how are these compensated for ?
