Does anyone have any test data on the free convection heat transfer coefficients (or Nussult numbers) for pin-finned plates, such as those found on electronics chassis'? We are about to fund a research project with Brent Webb at BYU to provide us with such data. What we have seen in the literature and heard of in industry focuses on forced convection (current work at TI) or is limitted in pin aspect ratio (work by Sparrow & Vemuri at UMinn). For those interested, our work will attempt to isolate free convection (from radiation effects), will use plates 9-12" square (hopefully), with low delta-Ts (6-8 degC) and will use 60-100 mil pins with aspect ratios (L/D) up to about 10. We are presently looking for ways to obtain samples as inexpensively as possible. (We'll probably machine hex-shaped pins by sawing plates at 3 angles). Any inputs on available results or on our plans are appreciated. Research results will be published in the literature and passed on over net to any interested. ______________________________________________________________________________ Don Patterson, Iowa'82 \\ INTERNET : dmp@epg.harris.com | _ _ | Harris Corporation \\ UUCP : ...!uunet!x102a!dpatterson |_| |_| | | Engr.
