I've been looking at a couple problems where some type of digital data, never more than 8 bits wide needs to be converted and run through a serial port on a computer, at 9600 baud. There is usually some handshaking involved so a straight uart won't work. What is the cheapest chip combo that would do the job? Using quantity one pricing I have come up with. A) Z8 @ 2.95, 2764 @ 3.95, crystal @ 1.75, Harris 5V->RS232 chip 4.80 $13.35 B) 8748 with software uart @7.95, crystal @ 1.75, Harris chip 4.80 14.50 Can anyone think of anything cheaper? It probably needs a timer if doing software uart. -- Joe Freeman jfreem@uncecs.edu The opinions espressed here are my own and are not shared by my employer or anyone else I know of.
