[sci.electronics] Playing a Walkman/Discman through your car radio

tonyo@tekred.CNA.TEK.COM (Tony Ozrelic) (02/21/91)

Instead of trying to drive the output of the car radio amplifiers, try
this: grab the preamp inputs at the volume control and feed your audio in
from there. Now you can change the volume by tweaking the radio's control,
instead of the Walkman's. Works for any radio. Obligatory Bad Schematic:

---- radio audio -----* switch (either manual or in the jack)
                         ____________
---- walkman audio----* / |
                                     |
                                     |
                                     /
                                     \
                                     /<------- to preamp ------
                                     \
                                     / radio volume control
                                     |
                                     |
                                    gnd

True, but without a circuit diagram and an easy-to-get-to PCB in the radio,
it may be difficult to do this. Certainly the PCB in my radio wasn't
designed to be got at (mechanically or electrically!). Output stages are
usually separate, hence easier to get at.

Actually, with my scheme the radio volume knob *does* adjust the Walkman
sound level as turning up the radio volume pot reduces the resistive
divide-by ratio I used to cut down the Walkman signal level. Not as neat,
but still effective.
