[sci.electronics] how many engineers does it take to change a light bulb

As a followup to an excellent article by a similar title, I
quote from a GE data sheet:

"All GE Halogen lamps are designed without diodes. Diodes
can cause lamps to flicker, especially at low wattages.
GE's diode-free construction means no annoying flicker,
just natural white light."

My question is "why diodes at all?"
