[sci.electronics] QUERY: hall effect sensors & electronic compass

payne@theory.tn.cornell.edu (Andrew Payne) (04/05/91)

I vaguely remember seeing this thread, but then I didn't have an application
and now I do. I want a compass that I can interface to a computer
(or whatever). The thread I remember was about using Rat Shack's $49 offering
and building an interface. Is there a cheaper way to go?

How does this work? Does the RS compass use Hall devices? If so, where does
one find the devices suitable for this application? My copy of "Art of
Electronics" says that Hall devices can go down to 1 gauss, and the Earth's
magnetic field is 0.5 gauss. Is this information out of date?

Any info appreciated. Please e-mail (I'll summarize).
