[sci.electronics] Digital Audio on Satcom F1R

lynnh@tekfdi.FDI.TEK.COM (Lynn C. Hurd) (04/05/91)

Does anyone know the format of the digital audio (DATS) on
Satcom F1R transponders 3,15 and 21?

Can I build or buy an inexpensive decoder if I'm willing to
throw away error correction or anything else to simplify it?

Thanks,

The demod units for digital audio on F1R cost about $10k each.

The format used is very high density (on each transponder there are 20
15KHz bandwith channels or 40 7.5KHz channels) and without error correction
you end up out of sync with the uplink and lose what channel you're decoding.

I don't have the specifics any more, but I can probably find them out...

PS, the current audio transponders on F1R are 3, 15, 23, and 9 (9 is the
emergency backup transponder). Transponder 23 is used exclusively by ABC,
3 and 15 are split up among CBS, NBC/Mutual/Westwood One, Unistar, and more.
In the next couple years, ABC and CBS will both co-exist on transponder 23,
and will be using a new audio format which will use data compression to
fit 3 20KHz channels in the space of 2 15KHz channels.
