[sci.electronics] phone line splitter to fax and phone

Hi. Seeing as how we are now able to buy fax/modem boards for our
computer that can detect whether the incoming call is from a fax or a
normal phone call, is there a device available for an orginally phone
line which detects and splits the incoming call to two output lines -
one to a fax machine and one to a phone (1 phone line in, 2 phone lines
out)? If so, has anyone actually had experience or have purcahsed such a
device? Thanks in advance.

Thomas.

Yes. Several such devices are available. PC Magazine, Dec 11, 1990 did
a review of several such units. Most large department stores, or office
product stores will carry at least a couple of brands, or you can
get the others by mail order.

I've used units from two manufacturers, and they work reasonably well.
They have their quirks, too. On the whole, most brands will do the
basic switching pretty well.
