[sci.electronics] Damaged speakers, how to test

reyy@vax5.cit.cornell.edu (04/21/91)

Hello Everyone,
A few days ago I loaned my speakers to someone and got them
back damamged. Now I need to know what's wrong with them.
First of all, the woofers do not work AT ALL, even when hooked
up directly to the amp. The crossover seems to be working (i.e.
a voltage across the woofer terminals). The midrange and tweeters
produce sound, but I can't tell if they sound good or bad without
the woofers (will they sound REALLY bad if they're blown? This
has never happened to me before.).
Does anyone have any hypotheses, hints and/or suggestions before
I, for instance, buy new woofers and realize that all the speakers
are gone.
   FYI:
   Speakers are Technics SB-L56
   rated 120 Watts, 8 ohms
   woofers, I believe, are 10"
They were being powered by a 100 Watt amp
continuously for about 4 hours on "6" on scale of 10.
   (Gotta love those technical explanations!)
