[sci.electronics] Wanted: source for NS16550A UART

dan@dyndata.uucp (Dan Everhart) (05/15/91)

I'd like to find a mail order source for the National NS16550A UART.
Suggestions? Anyone know about how much they cost?

(In case you don't know, the 16550 is a 16450 with FIFOs and DMA
capability.)

Anyone responding, please POST :-) I, too, am looking for a QUICK
and RELIABLE source for NS16550AFN chips. (please don't tell me
about JDR. I tried ordering from them, and they sent the wrong parts
(different manufacturer)).

try Pioneer Electronics. We ordered 6 two weeks ago and they were
in stock at that time, about $10 each. They are an eastern-US
distributor based in Cleveland (216)-587-3600, branches in 15
other states.

I just checked with Hamilton/Avnet. They have telephone numbers in most major
cities, and are asking US$9.90 each for NS16550AFN UARTS. Catch? They have a
$50.00 minimum order. Good news: They will ship COD. Stock in their Arizona
warehouse.

You can find the 16550As at JDR Microdevices or Jameco Electronics.

JDR	@ (800) 538-5005
Jameco	@ (415) 592-8097

I beleive that JDR will probably give you a better price (<$20).

A few weeks ago someone mentioned they had pursuaded Mouser Electronics
to stock the Unicorn Micro version of the 16550 chip for about $6.

According to the Mouser people (when I tried to place an order this morning),
they stopped carrying all Unicorn Micro chips last week.

Easy come, easy go....

I have been able to obtain a small quantity of NS16550AFN chips, at around
$11.00 each. If anyone is interested, I would be happy to sell them at
$15.00 postpaid and mailed from either the US or Canada. UPS for $2.00 extra.

Any small profit made in selling these would go to help upgrade the (free)
site here.
