[sci.electronics] Close Captioning Query

edbu@pogo.WV.TEK.COM (Ed Burress) (06/06/91)

The following is posted for a friend, his news feed is temporarily hosed.
Please e-mail directly to him..... kellym@ether.UUCP
				    Path listed at the end.

Does anyone know what the data format is for the digital closed
caption information found on line 21 of the odd video fields?
One of my TV books (Kiver Kaufman) describes this data as:

--Start Bit--Seven Data Bits--Parity Bit--Seven Data Bits--Parity Bit--

with the two pairs of data fields supposedly in ASCII format.

Does this mean that the program dialog is just straight ASCII characters?
My preliminary experiments seem to suggest that this is not true.
Is it compressed? Encoded? EBCIDIC? If any one knows for sure,
could you please email me info on this? Many thanks...
