I have a friend (Don't they all start like this....), who recently picked up a truckload of Industrial/Office Fluorscent lighting fixtures. The only problem is that after getting them home (and seeing me....), he discovered that these are the typical Industrial 270 VAC models. Then he checked with a local electrical supply place about 'conversion kits' but reportedly, nothing exists for these fixtures... I have used this kind of lighting on variacs, but haven't a really good clue just how much tolerance exists without seriously degrading either bulb or transformer/starter life. I'm thinking that I can come up with about a 2:1 transformer sitting around and run the 120 up to 240 or so pretty easily. And that difference is about 16% or the same as 100vac in place of 120vac. Does anybody have any experience digging up some old transformers to cheaply rig up something for this voltage fixtures. al -- Al.
