[comp.os.misc] Task Migration

mj@elmgate.UUCP (Mark A. Johnson) (06/29/87)

I am doing some reading on task migration and scheduling.
I was wondering if anyone had references on this sort of
material? I am interested in dynamic task migration in
	loosely-coupled homogeneous-architecture distributed systems.
Migration of running or swapped processes is my major
interest, but papers on load-balancing and/or initial
process scheduling using these techniques are also good.
I am interested both in case studies and "Tanenbaum"-style
literature surveys with lots of references at the end. I haven't
had too much success ransacking the journals for this
material, but then again, I am a novice at doing this sort of
literature research. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking for articles which report on the perfomance of task migration
schemes in distributed operating systems. I am not interested in the load
balancing aspects, only on a performance comparison between schemes which
migrate tasks once they have been started and those which do not. I was
told that such a study was done using DEMOS/MP, but I am unable to find a
reference which reports it. I have the 1983 SOSP article and one on DEMOS
in Software, Practice and Experience, April 1987, but no comparison of the
type I am after was reported.

Do you know of any (reasonably available) articles which do make this
comparison?
