[comp.os.misc] Simulation model of OS

jonas@his.UUCP (Jonas Mellin) (09/29/89)

I am teaching operating systems, mostly UNIX and (ms-dos), at a
university in Skovde.

Is there a simulation model of a complete operating system where
someone can change the parameters and see the simulated system performance.

The software should preferably be PD.

Please send me responses by E-mail. I will post a summary if it is
requested.

Disclaimer: Even a blind man may know how to C.

I guess one could use a real operating system that's been designed
   for learning purposes:

Minix by Andy Tanenbaum, described in the book "Operating Systems:
Design and Implementation" (Prentice-Hall, ISBN 0-13-637406-9 hardback,
0-13-637331-3 paperback); Minix source code for either MS-DOS PC/512K,
MS-DOS AT/640K or the Ateri ST available separately also from P-H.
Not quite pd but cheap and well-supported and in use at over 10000
sites throughout the world (or so they claim)...

Andy T is reachable at <ast@cs.vl.nl>
