Concurrent commentary! Points re three(3) areas of discussion current in this and related groups. Townshend (solo) - Y'all missed the best musical effort Townshend has been involved with in the last 5 years - his album in collaboration with Ronnie Lane (of Faces fame) entitled Rough Mix - a veritable feast of treasures. Multi-tracking - Multi-tracking allows for all sorts of neat orchestrations, etc. BUT encourages the type of over-produced fluff currently choking the airwaves - which is why some people, eg Bob Dylan and Neil Young, have always avoided reliance on it, to achieve that fresh sound. People like Charlie Parker, Coltrane, and the younger Mingus never seemed to miss it much either. On the other hand, the Clash rely on it heavily... Wasted Talent - I refer to Flink Poyd, the object of much adoring silliness on this net. Yes, oodles of talent, and moments of Umma Gumma, WYWH, and some others are in fact wonderful. But all too often lost in a sea of masturbatory studio trickery and really, truly, horribly pretentious, self-pitying lyrics. I just don't feel that sorry for Roger Waters, and in the spirit of item #1 above (solo efforts by Who personnel), listening to the Wall makes me want to take Entwistle's advice and smash his head against it. I feel much better now... Tim Bray ...decvax!microsoft!ubc-vision!mprvaxa!tbray

Pink Floyd does seem to have gradually evolved into a one-man show. The older albums have a lot more contributions by Gilmour/Mason/Wright. Have they just dried up, leaving Waters to carry the burden as best he can? Or does Waters have such control of PF that nobody else in the band gets to make any contributions besides their playing? -michael
