Enough already! Only one person correctly identified the problem I was having: CP/M 2.2 SUBMIT.COM works under 3.0, but XSUB.COM _DOESN'T_ - 3.0 uses a different mechanism to feed .SUB file lines into the program being executed. Hence my useage of XSUB was failing, and the rest of the script with it.
