To Michael Ellis (whom I don't think I can reach by mail; have you ever gotten anything in the mail from me?): You're right. It shouldn't matter what names are used to describe music and musicians. My only gripe is the stranglehold that the "rock music industry" (which probably makes more T-shirts, jackets, and posters than records) has on today's music, and the resulting lack of inventiveness in rock. I respect those who choose jazz as their favorite form of music, but I regret the fact that some have made that same decision out of snobbery and/or misinformation. I respect those who seek new noise and sounds from within the boundaries of "rock", and I applaud their efforts, but I wish that those who are truly not making anything resembling rock (e.g., the 'Dents) be given the freedom to say so, and to create their own forms of music for today's "generation" without the "stigma" of being associated with the music of a previous generation. Rich Rosen (Are you the same Michael Ellis who wasn't the one who bought a pet ant in a department store during Rag Week ... ?)
