We are running several VAXes under 4.1 and 4.2 in the Engineering
Computing Facility at U. of Toronto, and get polite flak
on a regular basis about the number of good packages available
under VMS, in contrast to the dearth of packages under UNIX.
Our Mechanical Engineering Dept. has prepared a wish-list which follows.
1. Large scale general purpose engineering analysis system employing
finite element technology. Capabilities to include structural and
thermal analysis of 1, 2, or 3-D. (eg. ANSYS package or equiv.)
2. Kinetic, dynamic and equilibrium analysis system for mechanical
linkage systems. (eg. SDRC IMP or equivalent)
3. Solid modelling program with 2-D or 3-D capabilities and links
to other graphics and analysis programs. (eg. SDRC GEOMOD or equiv.)
4. Interactive graphics system which provides a common database for
design, drafting, numerical control and management information.
(eg. AD2000)
Any information about adaptations of these or other packages under UNIX,
or any locally-invented packages will be appreciated. Being a university,
we are most interested in free and inexpensive software. Many thanks.
