[net.wanted] per-page pr

Has anyone out there ever written a per-page pr(1) or subset thereof?
I am tired of having a list of 2000 items to print in four columns
and having to look ALL the way down four pages at the first column,
go back to the first page and look ALL the way down at the second
column, etc. I am not so tired, however, that I will not ask for
a copy before I write one.

Basically, a pr(1) that orders it's output internally as usual, then
decides how much will fit on a page and does a mini-pr for that page,
continuing this process until it is finished.

Please reply via mail or, for the benefit of all, post to net.sources.

Thanks very much,

You have a truly amazing version of pr(1) if it does what you say,
printing the first column all the way down the document before it
starts the second column.

The version I have (System III) and all previous ones print multiple
columns per page. Considering that pr is happy to read from pipes, it's
hard to see how it could do elsewise.
