Regarding the current discussion on adapting old CoCo Disk Controllers to work with the newer (CoCo2 and 3) machines that lack the +12v supply (needed by old controllers), I came across an interesting advertisement in an electronics supply catalog. As you know, the old disk controllers use the WD1793 controller chip. It is the device that requires the +12 volts. The following is an extract from a `Standard Microsystems Corp' advertisement: Our FDC 1791, FDC 1793, FDC 1795 and FDC 1797 are the current industry-standard floppy disk controllers. Our FDC 9791, FDC9793, FDC9795 and FDC9797 provide the same popular parts, but eliminate the need for a 12-volt power supply. Does anyone know anything about these devices? If they are pin compatible with the WD1793, and the price is not exorbitant, it might be possible to upgrade the old controllers my substituting the FDC9793 for the WD1793 chip. Could life be this simple? Terry Ingoldsby ....ihnp4!alberta!calgary!ingoldsby
