[comp.sys.m6809] text formatting/word processing

I would like to use my '3 to write papers for school, and I'd
really like to do it under OS9. The question: is there any way
other than using TSWord? What do YOU use to format text with?
OS9 EDIT doesn't count for formatting but I'll probably use it to
enter text if used with TSWord since TSEdit doesn't like the '3.

If there is a reasonably trustworthy/priced word processor that only ran
stand-alone I might be inclined to go that route, but it MUST support
80 columns on the '3. A spelling checker would be nice but I don't
want any other bells or whistles.

I've been working with Stylograph lately but it isn't without
its problems. I'm using the /term driver that was posted on the
Net some time ago. The CoCo version of Stylo doesn't work properly
with it. The cursor disappears and you really can't edit effectively
with a full screen editor and no cursor.

I bought the Full 6809 Stylograph recently to try to correct the
problem, but it has its own problems. My current version can't find
/P to do my printouts. Furthermore, under Level I OS-9 on the CoCo,
Stylo can only handle a bit over 1 page in memory, which is terrible.
Under Level II it should be better.

If anyone is interested I have a simple text formatter written in BASIC09
that is capable of doing simple text formatting. It can't do fancy stuff
(like footnotes, superscripts, etc.) but is capable of formatting documents
with titles, paragraphs, pagination, varying line and indent sizes. If
anyone is interested send me mail; if several people are interested I'll
just post it to the net.

One note that I've always meant to post, but never remembered involves the
TSEdit program. There are two undocumented commands (at least I never found
any mention of them) to change from `program' to `text' mode while in the
program. Shift t sets EM=1 (text mode) and shift FG (FG must be pressed
simultaneously) sets EM=0 (program mode). You can also use one of the
function keys missing from the matrix if you have a fancy keyboard.

Where is OS9 Level II????????

I have found that one of the best kept secrets in text formatting is the
'TEXT' formatter from Computerware. I believe it's still $34.95 . It
claims to be an 'NROFF' compatible formatter (assuming use of the
memorandum macros 'mm'). This is *somewhat* debatable.. there are a
few minro tweaks that need to be made on a document prepared using TEXT if
it is later to be printed using Nroff, but for the most part, I ship
reports & papers back and forth between Unix and OS9 and am able to
produce smartly formatted output from the same basic file.

There are a variety of editors available in the public domain for OS9.
If your choice was a line editor, I'd recommend QED. It's available
in the UG library (either in the OS9 Forum on CompuServe or directly
available from the UG). If you choice is full screen, the MicroEmacs
has been ported to OS9. I have a copy running under level II on my
Gimix, and it looks as if it'd be a trivial modification to make it
run under the Coco3's version of OS9. Be advised that it doesn't
utilize some of the flashier features of Uemacs - yet.

Lastly, regarding a spelling checker. This TOO is available in the
public domain. There was one written by Eric Williams years ago, alonf
with tools to add words, decrypt the dictionary, etc. Carl Kreider
(one of our OS9 gurus) has speed it up, and provided for additional
dictionaries for both common words and user specific words, in
addition to the gobal dictionary.

Hope this has been helpful.

.... apologies to all on the spelling in my previous posting - too
much caffeine, and too little sleep and attention to detail ( @ @ ).

"On the stock order and should be in in a couple of weeks" for the last three
months! :-) Honestly, one RS I want to said that it's not even on the stock
list, even though the [low down, dirty little] computer center nearby has had
it coming in for the last 3 mo. Sigh, what they'll do to keep ya comin' in!
