[comp.sys.m6809] netnews

In a short while I will be leaving the university which provides me with
access to the net. Does anyone know of any OS9 software that can be used
to access the net (the local system manager could be persuaded to give me
a feed if software existed to do this automatically). I frankly don't
know what is involved in doing this, so if anyone can enlighten me I'd
appreciate it. Alternatively, is there another way (via a commercial net)
onto readnews?

There is a package in the Public Domain called 'uuslave' that allows
you to act as a passive UUCP site. The latest version just came out a
week or so ago in net.sources, and a couple of folks are working on
porting it to OS9 (albeit at a *very* relaxed pace). Also, the
downside of that is that you probably should have a dedicated phone
line, and a reasonable amount of storage.

Re: another way onto the NET. I know that folks without access to a
Unix system have been able to get on by 'subscribing' to CHINET in
Chicago. As I understand it, this is a public access unix/xenix system
run by Randy Seuss (sp?). The last I heard there was a $50/year charge
(plus of course phone connect charges).

Regarding Terry's request for Net News support under OS-9, we
don't have anything special as yet. On my local node those of us
with News access also have direct access to the directories. If
this is the case, and you have Kermit, you can do mass downloads
to an OS-9 system of the relevant directories. The directory
structure is shown by the news group:

comp.sys.m6809

/usr/spool/news/comp/sys/m6809

On our system the messages are stored directly by the message
number (the same will be on all Unix systems). OS-9 6809 has a
problem though, because we can't have diskfile starting with numbers.
OS-9 68K, can (I think--I haven't checked it, but I recall hearing
it did this). Assuming you will be allowed to take up a bit of
temporary storage, you can write a short program in BASIC09 (or
anything else for that matter) to send the necessary 'cp' messages
to your Unix node to copy the messages to a download directory
and change the names to start with a letter. After that, you
just send the whole directory via Kermit. That's a quick solution,
providing you have a working Kermit and only want 1 topic (and
have sufficient disk storage :-).

PS: Congratulations for graduating in order?
