Well, I got the Speech Systems board, actually just
distributed by them, it's from PBJ. Looks great,
nice instructions. COst me $70 w/out chips.
Well, I put it in last nite (bye bye warranty, the 90 days
were past) and she DIDNA WORK! Guess that's what I get
for using 3 different brands of RAM chips. But the type
codes indicate that none of them are 64Kx4 instead of
the required 256Kx1.
Time to put the 4 original chips back in and see if I still
have a Coco III. Hope to get it up before Level II OS9
comes out. COme to think of it, that may be too easy...

Followup-To:512K Upgrade (PBJ) I Purchased the PBJ 512K Upgrade for the Coco 3 from Computer Plus in Littleton, Ma. It cost $99.00 (including memory chips) and was easy and quick to install. The installation involves unpluging 4 memory chips and removing a decupling cap the pluging the board into the header supplied by Tandy. I also purchased a program called Ramdisk by Cer-Comp and set up 2 ramdisks in my extra memory. This leads me to believe that the upgrade was successful. I almost forgot to mention that the sattelite board which I installed in my Multi-Pak works well in my system (instructions in the Jan issue of the Rainbow page 98). This installation is not difficult if you know something about pc board assembely. Has anyone any information or input about color monitors. I am in the market to buy a high-res monitor for coco 3 but I have heard bad reviews om the CM8. I am interested in hearing all the prows and cons. Thanks in advance.

Can anyone make any recommendations for 512K upgrades for the CoCo3? What kind of chips should I look for? Does it make any difference? What different types of boards do they come on? Any special questions I should ask when I place an order? Thanks for the help. In other news, I am coming to you from my CoCo using Cer-comps' DatapackIII+. So far, I am very pleased with the performance of this software. Documentation is very complete, only a couple of typos. One thing I would like to see is a quick reference quide showing all the commands and keystrokes. The software is copy protected so when you get the disk, you make a backup of it, but cannot use the backup. You use the original disk and if you have problems, backup the original from the copy. One of the nice features of DatapackIII is the Autoexecute file that gets entered when you initially boot up. This file allows you to define system parameters such as screen color, terminal mode, baud rate, printer rate, etc. If you use the RS232 program pack in a multipak interface, you can make disk saves, or print files with two keystroke ease. One of the most improtant reasons I chose this package was the vt100/52 emulation. Our Netnews runs on an Amdahl. To edit any files, I need to be able to run VI. In VT 52 mode, I can edit with ease! One flaw I did notice was the lack of documentation on how to use the 512K as 2 RAMdisks. In the advertisement, they say you can have two RAMdisks. However, nowhere in the docs do they mention anything about RAMdiskds. I called Cer-Comp about this and they said that I should use them as drives 2 and 3. I guess I won't find out until I get my upgrade. Well happy byteing!!
