Does anyone have any recommendations for hard disks? What all do you need to get for it to work with a CoCo3? How do you boot OS9 from the hard disk? Will the new Tandy 20Meg external hard disk work with the CoCo? Is is possible to use an internal hard card in place of a hard disk? Also, there's a fellow on the Forum (CompuServe OS9) that manufactures and markets units that support up to 3 hard disks and 4 floppies (360/720/1.2) based on the Western Digital 1002-05. He'll basically sell you what you need (all or some of the components). b) Included in a) above. c) Most systems boot from floppy, and then auto-switch to the hard disk. This is because the initial boot code is hardwired into the DISK ROM. Bruce Isted's system does have a boor rom option, though... you replace your disk rom. d) Forget Tandy.. (a good general rule anyway). There have been too many instances of idiots in the stores selling a coco owner something that couldn't work (forget the disk part #'s). Best bet is to pick up a copy of the Computer Shopper.. I got a 40 Mb there a few weeks back for ~$425. e) Where would you *put* the hard card?? Being that they were designed for PC/AT bus use, I'd have to say that that's *close* to an impossibility. -- Pete Lyall Usenet: {trwrb, scgvaxd, ihnp4, voder, vortex}!wlbr!pete Compuserve: 76703,4230 (OS9 Sysop) OS9 (home): (805)-985-0632 (24hr./1200 baud)

You Will need a EXTERNAL Hard Disk, a CoCo3 Hard Disk Interface, and a Cable
Kit, which I can not give you the price of since I can't find the price...
Sorry.
This is what Tandy charges:
===========================
20-Megabyte Hard Disk $699.00
CoCo3 Hard Disk Interface $129.95 uses OS9 2.0
CoCo3 Cable kit from controller to Hard disk. Check Radio Shack for the price
on that one.
Hope this helps,

Unless the Tandy hard disk has it embedded in there - for $699 for a mere 20 meg, they'd better! Generally, the components required are: a) HCA - Host computer adapter b) Hard Disk Controller card c) Hard Disk (ST506/ST412 type) d) Case, Cables, and Power supply. The HCA is best obtained either from OWLWARE or from Bruce Isted. Owlware uses a SCSI/SASI type intyerface to a Xebec style controller card.. Bruce uses an HDO bus to a WD-1002-05 type card. The former are a little cheaper and easier to find, while I belive the latter offers better performance. Price ranges on HCA are approximately $75-$150, and the controller cards run $110-$190. Cables are trivial - usually a 40 or 50 pin from HCA to the controller, and a 34 pin and a 20 pin cable go from the disk controller to the drive - you can make 'em yourself with a little effort and save $$$. Disk shopping is best done in the Computer Shopper. I picked up a fast 40 megger a few weeks back for around $425. BTW - Owlware advertises in Rainbow I'm told (no longer subscribe), and Bruce is on te OS9 Forum on Compuserve. If there's a demand, I'm sure I could post his address. -- Pete Lyall Usenet: {trwrb, scgvaxd, ihnp4, voder, vortex}!wlbr!pete Compuserve: 76703,4230 (OS9 Sysop) OS9 (home): (805)-985-0632 (24hr./1200 baud)
