Sorry I had to post this, but I don't have a UUCP path to Eric.
Eric,
Thanks for the info about using the bitbanger instead of the Program Pak,
Pete Lyall sent me some information about how to fix the RS-232 pak to work
with the COCO3. I hadn't thought about using the port on the back of the COCO.
I'll see if I can get that cable. Your idea may be the easiest solution, or at
least a reasonable temporary one. If you didn't see Pete's posting on how to
make the PHYSICAL IRQ for the COCO to RS232 Pak, let me know and I will send
you a copy of his instructions.
Also, Tim Koonce posted some information about the 2 mhz. clock speed that
may be causing the problem. He said it was caused by a problem with the
6551 chip on the pak.
[A general note to the net, if I were to replace the 6551 chip, how would I
know what version to get. That is, how would I know that the chip I bought
had the bug fixed. I know that sounds like a dumb question, but I'm
a *REAL* novice when it comes to hardware.]
Thanks again for the information, I'll let you know how it goes.
Mike King

[Who's afraid of the big bad line ea Mike, and whoever's interested: I think the 2 MHz version of the 6551 is the 6551-1. But I think the RS232 pack uses a 65C51 (CMOS low power version) and I don't recall if a 65C51-1 is available or not (you could try using the non-CMOS version, anyway). Send me mail if you need a source for these parts, as I refuse to post an ad for a company on the net. The price is on the order of $8.00 or so. -Rich Richard Kottke richardk@puff.WISC.EDU

Is this the conventional short-DCD-to-RXD lines at the plug for purposes of FIRQ generation? Might be interestimg to see what Eric has cooked up, if not.... >[A general note to the net, if I were to replace the 6551 chip, how would I >know what version to get. I believe the part is a 6551A - just ask for the 2MHZ version (from JDR, Hamilton Avnet, or wherever). -- Pete Lyall (OS9 Users Group VP)| DELPHI: OS9UGVP | Eaton Corp.(818)-706-5693 Compuserve: 76703,4230 (OS9 Sysop) OS9 (home): (805)-985-0632 (24hr./1200 baud) Internet: pete@wlbr.eaton.com UUCP: {ihnp4,scgvax,jplgodo,voder}!wlbr!pete

[No, Virginia, there is no such bug as a line-ea OOOOPS! I just checked my data books. There IS a CMOS 2MHz 6551, it's made by RCA, called the 65C51-2. The non-CMOS 2MHz part is the 6551A. Apologies, -Rich Richard Kottke richardk@puff.wisc.edu
