[comp.sys.m6809] Cheap 3.5" Disk Drive

ag@moss.ATT.COM (09/08/88)

I noticed that Radio Shack has a Tandy 1000 (ex?) 3.5" disk drive on
sale for $99. Does anyone have any information about interfacing this
to a CoCo (for OS9)? I have a J&M Controller, and two 5.25" disk drives,
but I am willing to give up my drive 1 if I can get this working.

The sale ends soon, so I don't have much time....

Thanks in advance.

These use a non-standard combination power-signal cable
meant for the 100tx model. The toshiba 3.5" drive kit is
available in this price range from eletro-tek in Chicago,
and has standard power connectors and 34-pin card edge.
This should be a direct replacement form a 5.25 inch half
height. You will have to redo your disk parameter tables
to take advantage of the new drive ( 2 sides, 80 tracks,
18 sectors/track ).

Say Ag, I was going to post the same damn thing but
you saved me the trouble. It appears this drive is exactly a DS-80T,
and in a nice little case it's a steal at that price,
tho I guess you have to feed it some power (not much current tho).
I'd say go for it, but then I talked you into Coco 3
in the first place so you won't listen to me, right?

It's been a long time since I added a non standard drive to the coco, but
the cable is simple it should be the same, but you may have to change the
select jumpers so the drive is selected at the right time. You also need
to chage the D0 device header (you can use the assembler to make a nice
description file or use the debugger) If you want to use both sides,
you will need something like the fdiks or other utilitys that will allow
you to format both sides of the disk. I had a 720K drive as physcal
drive 1, OS9 drive D0, and coco-dos drive 1, this allowed be to boot off
of the standard coco drive and then run OS9 off of the 720K drive. You
have to change DISKMAN (something like that) to get this to work.
Look for the string 01, 02, 04, 40 in the disk code.

If you have an questions about this, contact me, and I will look up
the details.

I was in the local 'Shack last weekend, and the salesperson, who seemed to
be reasonably competent (even if my spelling isn't), indicated that they
can NEVER get the 3.5" drive and doesn't know why they keep advertising
it.... I had been contemplating getting one too, to use with my COCO and
XT, but it looks as if I don't have to worry about it anymore. Better see
if you can even get one!!!

Is there a good source for 3.5" media? I'm currently purchasing 5.25"
floppies for $.35 apiece. Who has the best deal on 3.5" floppies in
bulk rates?

I intend to buy mine from MEI. I've gotten great 5.25's there for $.25
(lot of 200, $.27 in lots of 100). The last ad I've got says 3.5" disks
are $.89 (ssdd) or $.99 (dsdd), lots of 50. I've had great luck with
the 5.25s, which come with sleeves.
Also, they have 70x5.25 or 40x3.5" disk holders, $3.95 in lots of two+.
Labels are cheap--5.25, 100/$2.00; 3.5, 50/$1.50
(No I don't work there, I just like their service!)
[My ad says expires Mar 15, 88, but every ad we've gotten since we
heard of them has had only successively lower prices.]
