My CoCo is an old gray box -- the bubble says it's 32K, and the person I got it from gave no indication it was anything else. The diagnostics program says I have 16K, but the documentation with the program doesn't seem to recognize any larger memory. On a small sample text file, color disk scripsit says I have over 17500 memory left; that sounds about right, I guess. But, on the same file, tsedit says I have over 47500 memory left. Does tsedit not recognize anything smaller than 64K? Or is it possible, that, without great effort or expense, I could make use of software requiring 64K? Specifically, should I watch for sale prices on the deskmate or level 1 OS9? -- G. Thomas Osterfield archivist (216)325-2511 ext 531 gto@neoucom.UUCP {cwjcc, hal, scooter}!neoucom!gto CIS:74106,1153

However, BASIC and RS-DOS cannot access the entire 64K at once, since the ROMs are mapped into the upper 32K whenever you're in BASIC. TSEDIT (apparently, since I've never used it under RS-DOS) is able to use the entire 64K by switching out the ROMs and using its own routines (rather than using the ROM routines like SCRIPSIT does). Level 1 OS-9 is sort of hard to find, but it still can be bought, especially if your local Rat Shack has a tent sale. You shouldn't pay any more than about $20 for it (the going rate the last time I saw it). -- Standard disclaimers apply. Your mileage may vary. Batteries not included. Void where prohibited by law.
