[comp.sys.m6809] what is the future of OS-9?!

roccella@pilot.njin.net (Matthew Roccella) (11/09/90)

Help!!!
I have heard that Radio Shack is going to discontinue to sell
the CoCo 3. Does this mean an end to us OS-9 users? As far as I know,
OS-9 is not really used much anymore. Everything has been replaced by
DOS or UNIX. Is this just a misconception (I hope)? Will Radio Shack
market another CoCo compueter that can utilize OS-9? Will software
still be available for OS-9, or will it be very hard to get.
I have just invested in purchasing a CoCo3 and the OS-9
operating system. I don't want my system to be obsolete before I even
have a chance to master it! Does anybody know what's going on? Please
let me know. I like OS9 much better than DOS. It is MUCH simpler to
use than UNIX. I have MUCH MORE programming power with OS-9 than I
would with DOS. I don't want to see a good thing go!

Well, OS-9 is very much alive. It is currently available for
Macs, Amigas, Atari STs, and I*M 386 and 486 machines. Tandy doesn't
support it any more. (They have gone MS-D*S,) but Microware is still
developing stuff for it. You may have heard about a couple of new
68000 machines that will so be offered by two companies that is a
replacement for the COCO. One company is Interactive Media Systems,
and the other is Frank Hogg Labratories. I don't have the telephone
numbers, of addresses handy, but if you want to go OS-9 IMHO this is
the direction to go. BTW Tandy stopped making COCO's a year or more
ago (I think?) OS-9 stuff was was stopped then too.

                         Hope this helps,

Does anyone know more about the 386 version of OS-9? I've never seen it
advertised.

Thanks.

I think it's called OS-9000, and it's (still) a Microware product. Or is
that Microwave?
