[comp.sys.tandy] Tandy 2000; an explanation

UUCP@vu-vlsi.UUCP (04/22/87)

The Tandy 2000 is a MS-DOS computer, not an IBM compatible. If you
have trouble grasping the difference, you can thank IBM's dogmatic
advertising. MS-DOS is an OS for the Intel 80x86/88 family of micro-
processors, of which the IBM-PC is the best known. It's possible
for a machine to run MS-DOS and be very IBM UNcompatible.

That out of the way, the T2000 is moderately compatible. It does have
excellent graphics, but there is a lot of common software that will
NOT run on it. Tandy stopped production some time ago, and is just
clearing out their inventory of the machines. My suggestion to your
friend would be to look into the T1000SX, or the T3000HL. Both are
EXTREMELY IBM-PC compatible. If he's dead-set on the T2000, make
ABSOLUTELY SURE he takes ALL the software he wants to run on it and
tests it on the machine FIRST.

Also remember the T2000 does NOT take standard IBM expansion cards; they
are a proprietary design.

Don't get me wrong; the T2000 is a really nice machine, but since the
industry unfortunately ADORES IBM, the 2000 never really got a chance.
(As an aside, it was actually the FIRST 'AT' class machine, with its
80186 CPU!!)
