I am using my Tandy-1000/Deskmate as a dialup terminal to a VAX/UNIX host at school. Since there is no termcap entries for Tandy series on the host's termcap database, I have to set the TERM environment variable to something else -- *vt52* is what I have been using. Everything works fine under this faked TERM value, except I cannot use any of the screen oriented editors, such as EMACS and VI. Is there any chance that somebody outthere in the Tandy community knows of a better termcap for my dialup terminal that would enable me to use either EMACS or VI? Or has someone himself/herself ever tried to build such a termcap entry from scratch? Any help is greatly appreciated. -- /__|__ _/-\_ | /__|__ * Jianhua Zhu *** UUCP: ...!tektronix!ogcvax!zhu "___|__, --- || /| ,|_/ * CSE Dept - OGC *** CSNet: zhu@oregon-grad ,"|", \|/ || ---+--- * 19600NW von Neumann Dr *** / \| \ /--- \| | * Beaverton, OR 97006 ***

(Regarding the use of a Tandy 1000 / Deskmate for Unix work...) I tried using Deskmate for a dialup situation here at UNM. The results were similar; OK until I tried VI. I found that I had to get a terminal program that emulates one of the terminal types offered by the system. POLY TRM is a program for PCs that works GREAT! It emulates a VT 100 without too many problems at all. (Some of the special characters are unavailable, like a backslash, but all in all, it got me through a semester of fortran!) If you have access to one of these specialized terminal programs, by all means give it a try. Good luck, Ollie - N6LTJ

I suggested this to a customer once, and he said it worked. BOOT the machine with a line in the config.sys file that says DEVICE=ANSI.SYS And then you have type "ansi" terminal that then system understands. If that doesn't work, and you ahve 256K or more memory I would suggest ProComm. You may use this on a trial basis to decide whether you want to register or not and use it. The full details are in the document that come with it. You can download it from there board at (314) 449-9401. - Warren Lavallee lavallss@hawk.CS.Ulowell.Edu lavallee@ulowell.UUCP [And of course, these views do not necessarily represent the views of the University of Lowell, or Tandy/Radio Shack.]

The following is a termcap entry from a Tandy 6000 Xenix system. It works ok... that's about as much enthusiasm as I can muster for the Deskteam terminal emulation. This entry also has the hooks for the filePro Database package and MS Word soft- ware. dm|dmterm|Deskmate terminal:\ :DK=^B2^M:HM=^B7^M^B7^M:LK=^B4^M:NU=^B9^M:P0=^B7^J:\ :P1=^B9^J:P2=^D:P3=^U:P4=\E\E:P5=^R:P6=^P:P7=^N:P8=\E^I:P9=^I:PA=^O:\ :PB=^F:PC=^L:PD=^B7^M^B2^M:PE=^T:PF=^B0^J:PG=^B8^J:PH=^B2^J:PI=^B4^J:\ :PJ=^B6^J:PK=^B5^J:PL=^B7^M^B4^M:PN=\E3:PR=^B7^M^B6^M:PS=^T:\ :PU=^B7^M^B8^M:Pd=^E:RK=^B6^M:U0=^A:U1=^B:UK=^B8^M:am:bs:cd=\Ek:ce=\EK:\ :cl=^L:cm=\EY%+ %+ :co#80:do=^J:ho=\EY :kd=^J:kh=^A:kl=^H:kr=^F:ku=^Z:\ :li#20:nd=^F:re=\EG0:ru=\EG<:sg#1:ue=\EG0:up=^Z:us=\EG8: # # # But really, use PROCOMM or KERMIT or anything but this watered down, weak sister of a terminal emulation. -- +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ | Bill Fischer "When the gods wish to punish us, | | ...!ihnp4!chinet!wmf they answer our prayers." - Oscar Wilde | +-----------------------------------------------------------------------------+
