[comp.sys.tandy] Pinout of serial port on 16b?

pmech@oucsace.cs.OHIOU.EDU (Paul J. Mech) (11/22/88)

	I replaced my old 16b with an NCR MiniTower and, true to my
experiences in dealing with Tandy in the last few years, was told by
the local service center that there was no pinout for the serial ports,
was told by the software people that the service people had it, and
was told by the salesmen that they could probably find a technical
reference that I could buy. Does anyone out there know the pinout for
the 'A' and 'B' serial ports on a 16b? I would assume that they are
the same as for the II and the 6000 (dangerous assumption, I know ...)?
I want to transfer over the last few source from the 16b, and then, if
I can find anyone who wants it, sell it.

Thanks in advance,
pjm

From the technical reference for the Model II, (yes, the pinout for the
Model II/12/16/16B/6000 is the same for channels A & B):

	Model II/12/16	       Attached Device
	Frame Ground    <-> 1
	Transmit Data   --> 2
	Receive Data <-- 3 This is a standard DTE configuration
	Request To Send --> 4
	Clear To Send   <-- 5
	DataSet Ready   <-- 6
	Signal Ground   <-> 7
	Carrier Detect  <-- 8
	Data Term Rdy   --> 20

	Xmit S.E.T <-- 15 Not available by default
	Xmit Clock --> 24 Not available by default
	Receiver Clock <-- 17 Not available by default

This does not apply to the multiterminal ports which are a botched DCE
configuration.

<Radio Shack is bound to support most of this; it is an EIA standard.
 Funny... They will support a connector, but not the machine it is
 bolted to...>

The serial `A' and `B' channels are basically RS-232C, DTE configuration.
So, there are a couple of ways to transfer between it and another DTE
port. You can take 3 (yes, three) null-modems, put two on one machine
and one on the other (you need one on each side so each side thinks it
has DCD [carrier] when it raises DTR, and the third re-crosses pins 2/3
and 4/5), and a straight '232 cable between. Or, if you have the kind
of null modem you can take apart, and don't mind rewiring, use two and
inside one of them, uncross pins 2/3 and pins 4/5.

Or, you can build a cable to do the same job, wired like this:

	Pin		Pin

	  1  <-------->   1

	  3  <-------->   2

	  2  <-------->   3

	  5  <-------->   4

	  4  <-------->   5

	  8  <-----+-->  20
		   |
	 20  <--+----->   8
		|  |
	  6  <--+  +-->   6

	  7  <-------->   7

Hope this info helps as well as the pin-out Frank provided.
