I have a few questions about the Tandy 1000 HX. Firstly, what type of chips do I need to bring the HX to 640 kB? I do have the "Plus" board and there are 8 free sockets on it. Do I just use 41256 chips (like the 1000 SX uses)? Also, I noticed that the chips on the "Plus" board are 120 ns chips. So, do I need to get 41256-12 instead of the 150 ns variety? I noteced when I put in the memory board a sticker which stated that the warranty would be voided if I opened the case. Does this mean that I have to go to Tandy to put a B: drive in? I asked the Tandy idiots and received their generic "We'll ship it to Pittsburgh" response. One final question regarding Tandy's Deskmate 2.0. Is there some reason why it won't run on my 1000 SX? I took the files on the 3 1/2" disk and put them on two 5 1/4" disks. When I tried to run it off my hard drive, my SX froze. I assume that Deskmate is not copy protected since DISKCOPY worked perfectly on the HX. Are there some TSR's on the HX's ROM drive that need to be run? I'm rather puzzled. Thanks in advance. --- Robert Sillett spectre@unix.cis.pittsburgh ..!pitt!spectre spectre@pittvms.BITNET

I think you should be able to use standard 256K chips rated at 150ns. My SX uses 150ns chips, and it runs at the same speed. The HX version of Deskmate probably won't run on other Tandy's because part of the program is in the HX's ROM. The SX does not have Deskmate in ROM. The new SL and TL have even more of Deskmate in their ROMs (the entire program I think, actually.) andyross@ddsw1.MCS.COM -or- ddsw1!andyross

Question #1 Yes, use the same chips, just move the jumper to the correct ammount of memory that youhave installed. Question #2 Yes/No, If you install the drive without screwing up anything or tearing up any of the labels TOO badly, you can tell anyone that asks "ONE OF THE STORES DID IT FOR YOU". If you mess something up, you blow it. Just be carefull and use common sense. Question #3 Sorry to say, but no they wont work. There are some differances in the two systems and the versions are just differant eneough to not let them be fully compatable. d

With respect to your attempt to run your 1000-HX version of DeskMate 2 on your 1000-SX .... The DeskMate "Core" is contained in ROM on the 1000-HX. This includes, amoung other things, all of the DeskMate video routines. There is no reasonable way to copy the ROMed code onto a floppy. If you have a "legal" version of the DeskMate 2 manual, you can take it to Radio Shack for a discount on DeskMate 3 which will contain the files you need along with substantially upgraded everything else.
