[comp.sys.tandy] Installing 3.5" floppy in Tandy 1000

paul@devon.UUCP (Paul Sutcliffe Jr.) (01/11/89)

Radio Shack is having a sale on the Tandy 1000 EX/HX external 3.5" disk
drive this month -- $99.95 (regularly $279.95).

What would prevent me from buying one of these, removing it from its'
external case and installing it inside an old Tandy 1000 (the original
one, not even a 1000A)? I'm running MS-DOS 3.2, so installing DRIVER.SYS
and using DRIVEPARM type 2 should work. Will the drive just plug in?

I bought one of these when they were on sale 6 months ago. It's working
fine in my no-name XT clone.

Now for the bad news. The drive is a Teac (don't have the model number
handy). You'll need to get a 5.25" mounting kit. This is needed both to
physically mounting the drive in the slot, and for the adapters to let
you connect the power cable and controller cable. 3.5 drives don't use
the same connectors as 5.25 ones.

I say bad news as I'm *still* looking for one of these kits. What I'm
using right now is one from a Toshiba drive and I had to kludge it a bit
as the mounting hardware doesn't quite match (the Toshiba drive works
with my Model 4, but not with the XT??!!)
